NOW, JIVE, TDC, MLNX Lead Short Interest Positions, Says Credit Suisse

Credit Suisse semiconductor and software analysts John Pitzer and Philip Winslow, respectively, this morning offer up their views on the short interest levels of their coverage areas, which showed some names having quite elevated short interest in the two-week period through December 15th.

For the software names, overall short interest rose 1.9% in the period, and was second only to Internet stocks’ short interest, a 7.9% versus 8%.

Among the more heavily shorted names, ServiceNow (NOW) had 38.5% of its float sold short, Jive Software (JIVE) had 28.9%, and Calidus Software (CALD) had 18% sold short.

Teradata (TDC) “exhibited the highest one-month increase in short interest,” writes Winslow, up 65%.

Among semis, Intel (INTC) saw short interest rise 4.1% in the period, but the big gainers were Mellanox Technologies (MLNX) saw a nearly 30% jump in short interest, and Atmel (ATML) saw a 24% rise. The biggest decliners in short interest were Avago Technologies (AVGO) and ASML Holding NV (ASML), both off 39%, and Anadigics (ANAD), down 32%.

Total semiconductor short interest of 3.62% in the period was way down from the peak this year of 6.1%, on July 8th, but up from a November 6th trough of 2.9%.
