The notion or idea of someone being stupid is something we may all at times have felt about another human being. Why on earth did s/he do that? I would never had said or behaved in that way. For goodness sake did you think that would work; and even at times exactly how stupid are you?
Depending on the relationship between the speaker and listener these comments may be relayed directly. If it is said directly the response, unless you are intimidated by the person, may be less than positive. In many instances the comments are made behind the person's back, thus no direct feedback is ever forthcoming.
So, what's the definition of stupid? A stupid act, because I do not believe anyone is stupid, is when you knowingly do something which may cause physical harm or hurt to another. It is also when someone is perceived as very dull, without sense or in a state of stupor. You can check how stupid you are by taking one of the stupid tests which have been designed and are provided on the internet. One of the stupid tests is entitled 'just how dumb are you?'I personally decided against taking the stupid test, as I would most probably have failed. I dare you to give it a go.
A famous man, Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying 'We are all born ignorant, but must work hard to remain stupid.' This may or may not be true, I leave the choice to you. I would just say that we are born with a certain innate understanding, i.e. a baby knows it needs to eat to sustain itself, and to cry when it is hurt or may be in need of attention. We may not have acquired the knowledge at such an early stage of our existence to make any significant contributions to the world, but we have an understanding of our needs and how to have them met. It is arguably only if we remain in a state of ignorance by refusing to be socialised and educated that we may be said to be stupid.
Is the term stupid the same as fufu, and if it isn't what's the difference? I would argue that this Westindianism implies that not only are you stupid, but also somewhat foolish. It may mean you are somewhat gullible, easily manipulated and led. It may also suggest a willingness to trust others, despite evidence to the contrary. Unfortunately there isn't as yet a 'fufu' test available, hopefully someone will provide one as a matter of some urgency, just in case checking is required. Here are a few example questions to test if you're 'fufu'; just in case you decide to take the test once its available:
1. How often do you ask for directions and how do you indicate that you understand the directions?
2. Are you aware when you're being deliberately misguided, and if so how do you react?
3. Do you readily trust other people?
Unfortunately I have failed miserably both in regards to the 'fufu and stupid tests. My argument is that I am a kind and generous person who looks for the best in others. At times, not necessarily through poor judgement I find myself to be perceived by others as being stupid. When this happens I bow to their superior knowledge of me and accept that I am only human.
