Top 5 Cheap Companies To Watch In Right Now

One of the troubles with market punditry is that people can pick different metrics to make whatever case they're trying to make. Some cite variations of the P/E ratio to say the S&P 500 is overvalued. Others use different versions to say it's undervalued.

Truth is probably found by looking somewhere in the middle. Last week, Charles Schwab chief investment strategist Liz Ann Sonders shared a unique way she likes to value market that does just that. Here's what she had to say (transcript follows):

Sonders: I do like to look at forward P/E and make an assumption that estimates, or at least make a call that estimates are not aggressive on the high side or the low side, so if you have some confidence that the stream of estimates over the next 12 months is not out there, then I think it's valid, given that the market is a leading indicator to look forward and not drive the car purely with the rearview mirror. Even on a trailing-12-month basis, the market is still pretty cheap.

I think small regional banks are set to make a comeback, and in this space I like Illinois-based First Busey Corp. (NASDAQ: BUSE). The bank has had its share of problems, as Illinois was one of the largest hubs of banking problems in the nation during the financial fallout. And BUSE borrowed $100 million TARP funds, which it hasn’t yet paid back in total, but it is making great progress toward that goal.

The company beat estimates in the last four fiscal quarters, and institutions are ramping up their ownership. Additionally, this cheap stock pays a nice little dividend of almost 3.3%. As the regional baking sector recovers, I think BUSE will be a leader.

Horizon Lines (NYSE: HRZ) is the largest oceangoing shipping company in the United States with a dominant market position along protected shipping lanes. One look at the steady resurgence in shipping demand, coupled with the company’s improving financials, and it seems the worst is behind them — making now the perfect time to scoop up this stock at a discount.

HRZ is up almost 30% since September, and I expect it to continue moving higher. Recent data show more goods are being manufactured, and they need to be shipped. Horizon will be one of the biggest beneficiaries.

With its value-priced merchandise, private label, and brand-name goods, Kohl's is part department store and part discounter. "It's not quite as high-end as Macy's, or as low as Wal-Mart," says Resendes. The near-term outlook for retailers is gloomy, but Kohl's should be in a good position when the economy rebounds, he says. "A lot of consumers have migrated to Wal-Mart in terms of price, but they'll migrate back up, and a natural first stop is going to be Kohl's." Another plus: Kohl's doesn't offer store credit cards, "so defaults aren't hanging over its head," says Resendes. "That will be a great strength when we exit this economic turmoil." He sees a 25 percent upside to the company's shares, which recently traded at $38.
