Lernout, Hauspie Given 5 Years for Fraud

Interesting coda to the DotCom bust this afternoon: Jo Lernout and Pol Hauspie, founders of the speech recognition firm bearing their names, were each sentenced to five years in prison today in Belgium after they were found guilty of accounting fraud. It is expected the two founders will only serve three of the five years, according to the write-up this afternoon by Dow Jones Newswires’s Charles Forelle.

Six other defendants were convicted of helping to inflate sales numbers for the company’s software at the end of the technology bubble in the ’90s, before Lernout & Hauspie filed Chapter 11. The technology was later picked up by Nuance Communications (NUAN).
